What does this have to do with Tagora? Very little, except that three hard-working members of the Tagora committee are also helping out at this charity event. So if you’re free on 2 June, please go along and support them.

Tagora won the award last year for best stage presentation. This year we are not in competition, but a number of people are making the trip from Strasbourg to enjoy the atmosphere.

Yasmina Reza’s play (in English translation) will be produced by Tagora in December this year. Casting is now in progress, and the director, Pelin Iscan, is looking for actors. The cast consists of three men, so as far as stage roles are concerned the ladies are out of luck this time round – although there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved in other ways.

Come along and help Pelin choose her men. See the calendar entry in the right-hand column for time and place.

Also of interest: this article from the Independent (British newspaper), which examines the difference between the British and French attitudes to Reza’s work.

The famous recruitment poster featuring Lord Kitchener inspired many imitations

The show has its origins in a BBC radio programme from the early 1960s.

The Theatre Royal in Stratford East, where Oh, What a Lovely War! was first staged, will host Nigeria’s Olympic House during the 2012 games.

The cast of the New York stage version included Barbara Windsor, now known to millions as one of the regulars of the TV soap EastEnders.

Lord Kitchener, whose pointing figure appears in the famous recruiting poster (left), was appointed Secretary of State for War at the outbreak of hostilities. He was the first member of the military to hold this post.

The well-known song of the period, It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, was the subject of a law-suit when Alice Smyth Burton Jay claimed the music was based on her song I’m on My Way to Yakima, thus proving that the concept of music piracy is not simply a 21st-century Internet phenomenon. She lost the case.

Archduke Ferdinand, whose assassination triggered off the chain of events that led to World War I, was a lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army at the early age of fourteen.

His assassin, Gavrilo Princip, was captured, but in view of his age (he was not yet twenty years old) was not sentenced to death. He was sent to prison, where he died in 1918 after contracting tuberculosis.

In 1917, French war defences included a plan to build a “decoy” Paris to attract the (hand-thrown) bombs of the fledgling Luftwaffe.
